Westerns are hard to get done on a low budget these days, and as a result, only a couple come out each year. Gunslinger’s Revenge is one of 2005’s few westerns, with the others being Brothers in Arms, Blood Trail, Ghost Rock, and Dead Birds.

Despite the off-putting fact that David Bowie plays a central character, Gunslinger’s Revenge is still quite the winner. Filmed six or seven years before it received a U.S. release, Gunslinger’s Revenge is a PG-13 western that focuses more on the family elements of the old West than violence. Make no mistake about it, there is still violence, as legendary gunslinger Jack Sikora (Bowie) comes to town seeking out former gunfighter Johnny Lowen (Keitel). Lowen has recently moved in with his much less gun-crazy son, and much of the film concentrates on the conflict that Lowen and his son have over how to raise his grandchild. It is thanks to Keitel’s acting skills that these family scenes come off well, as there was definitely potential for failure in the writing.

It does crawl along at a snail’s pace at times, but Gunslinger’s Revenge served its focus as a background movie. To give the term meaning, a background movie is a movie that I watch while writing other reviews, cleaning my apartment, or doing classwork. For a background movie to succeed it has to keep my limited attention, which is about half of what I’d give the movie at any other time. Gunslinger’s Revenge did that at most times, thus it deserves the good, but not great, rating to the left.
DVD: Barebones.
