Unlike most of my fellow online critics, I don’t mind the occasional gross out teen comedy. The natural response for most critics is to just slam them regardless of how good or bad the film, and that’s exactly how National Lampoon’s Going the Distance was treated upon its release. As it turns out, Distance is much better than most of the other films with the “National Lampoon” brand name attached to it.

Going the Distance is, through and through, unapologetically filthy. Pretty much acting as a Canadian Road Trip, Going the Distance is another tale of sex and alcohol-fueled college kids taking a road trip where everything that can go wrong does. With a soundtrack full of music from modern pop punk artists like Gob, it’s clear from the very beginning that the audience Going the Distance’s filmmakers had in mind were people similar to the characters in the movie.

Nick’s girlfriend Trish has broken his heart by running off to Toronto to be the assistant to a womanizing producer (Priestly). When he believes that she may be cheating on him, he and his two friends (best defined as Asshole and Stoner) head off to Toronto in an RV. They pick up two hot hitchhikers along the way, one of whom expectedly shows Nick that there are more women out there than just Trish. Eventually they windup at the Muchmusic Video Awards show, where they hang out with Avril Lavigne before the movie comes to its climax in a familiar, but okay as far as I’m concerned, way.

If you can let your guard down and enjoy a stupid teen comedy, you can do much worse than Going the Distance.
DVD: Barebones.
