What’s with York Entertainment and hating God lately?

Or at least it seems that way, as Fake Preacher marks their third film in a six-month period to be religious in nature, not to mention entirely worthless. We all know how things went with Playa in the Pulpit and Get Thee Behind Me, and Fake Preacher isn’t all that much better. Essentially playing as a more straightforward Playa in the Pulpit, not to mention less incompetent, Fake Preacher does manage to have an actual story. Too bad everything about that story is old and busted since we’re living in the twenty-first century and all.

The film delivers what the title promises, as we follow the adventures of a suave African American conman who earns a preacher position with the intention of stealing money from the church members. With his girlfriend by his side, everything looks to be going well. But when he decides to sleep with two female church members, leading to one becoming obsessed, he’s not prepared to deal with the repercussions.

This is the fourteenth film by director, writer, and producer Juney Smith in a twelve-year period. I’m disappointed to say that he hasn’t improved too much despite the hefty resume. Fake Preacher is amateurish as a whole, and not just because of its low budget. Smith used to be a theatre director, and it shines through with the kind of actors he chooses for his projects. While I’ve only seen three of his movies, and thus won’t solidify my low opinion of the man’s skills, Fake Preacher doesn’t exactly make him look golden.

Popular model Vida Guerra has a small part here, and I’m quite shocked York didn’t capitalize on her fleeting popularity by mentioning her role in the marketing.

DVD: Look at this fantastic menu and tell me York Entertainment isn’t going to be under soon.
