Dracula’s Curse

Whenever I go into a column, my intention is to write pieces that, while not capsule reviews, definitely aren’t the four or five paragraphs that eventually appear. The reason for this is that just about every movie, even the terrible ones, warrants the later treatment thanks to interesting backstories, plot outlines, and the needed criticisms. Occasionally, though, I select a movie that’s so uninteresting, so unapologetically boring and bland that anymore than one paragraph would nearly make it seem engaging.

Dracula’s Curse fits that bill to the tee. Originally made as an Italian mini-series, this English dubbed, obviously edited for time, modern version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” is an exercise in patience. Clocking in at a bit less than two hours, it feels more arduous than it really should be, considering that vampires often make for an interesting story. Here, a man skips town for a business trip just weeks before being married, only to wind up getting into an accident. He meets Patrick Bergin, playing the vampire Vladislav Tepes. From there, yeah, zzzzzzzzzzzz. There’s also mental patient too, but his most interesting scene hit the cutting room floor. So, yeah, back to the zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Hey look, two paragraphs! Well, sort of.

DVD: To my surprise, there’s actually a photo gallery, four deleted scenes including the mental patient scene, and various trailers for Lions Gate theatrical and direct-to-video productions.
