“What’cha lookin’ at?”
“A FOB… Fuckable Older Man.”
– Student in reference to Dolph Lungren

Dolph Lungren’s an actor who has never had the best luck. After a very brief run as a Hollywood action man in the 80s, even starring in the Masters of the Universe movie, Dolph quickly wound up labeled as nothing more than an action actor of poor quality. Once his career hit an absolute low in 2001 with the video premiere of the “less said the better” Agent Red, Dolph was gung-ho on hanging up his uzzis. Just like all the “retired” wrestlers that have promised to stay home, Dolph was lured back into the genre in no time. The first of his new films to be released is the action-packed Detention.

When I reflect back to the direct-to-video films from the early 90s, the majority of them are absolute crap, even when compared to the worst of today’s genre. They were shoddily produced junk that had the film quality of a low-level theatrical release, but absolutely nothing else. With a plot that brings over-the-top villains with unique hairstyles against Dolph Lungren, a bunch of high schoolers including a pregnant girl, and a cripple, all I could think of was that it’d end up taking on the qualities of those early 90s movies I’ve avoided in the past few years.

Detention, however, provides a great, fun ride. Lungren plays a badass history/gym teacher in, just like Jim Belushi and Treat Williams before him, an inner city, urban high school. Sick of the lack of respect and point to his teaching, he walks into the school with his intentions clear; today’s his last day. Some evildoers, for a reason not clearly explained, want to use the school when night comes in order to, uhhh, do their evil that somehow involves money. They didn’t count on anything more than a security guard to be present. Now Dolph Lungren’s after them, and he’s pissed.

Definitely recommended. Despite being produced by those animal loving bastards at Nu Image, it’s got itself a hefty budget, a few believable actors, and fun actions by those involved.

DVD: The usual, along with a quick Behind the Scenes feature, that while definitely fluff, is a bit entertaining.
