Well that was different.

Descendant, dumped out on video by York Entertainment right between cinematic classics Jacked and Banged Up, is not the typical York Entertainment movie. It was shot on film, has a couple name actors attached, has a unique idea behind it, and isn’t all that bad of a flick. So why in the hell did no one else pick this up?

Jeremy London of all people stars as Ethan Poe, a descendant of Edgar Allen Poe who is diligently working on his new novel. While no doubt a great writer, much of his success comes from his ancestor, although Ethan doesn’t exactly have a high opinion of the man. With his agent on his back to finish the new book, he rents a new home in hopes of inspiration. It’s here that he meets the house’s owner, Ann Hedgerow (Heigl). As their romance begins, murders start to happen all around the city, and Deputy Burns is starting to believe that the new resident is behind them.

And yes, lets not forget the best and weirdest part of the movie. Ethan is haunted by his ancestor, who he speaks and screams at during the most inopportune moments.

Descendant eventually takes a huge dip into mediocrity thanks to the supernatural angle the filmmakers try to run with. That doesn’t work too well, nor does their choice to play rock music at the worst of times help these scenes.

London is guilty of overacting at times, but when he’s not there is some talent being shown. I was impressed, especially since psychologically fucked is not a role he played on “Party of Five” or in Mallrats.
DVD: Barebones.
