Cyborg Soldier
Release Date: September 1994 (Japan)

Starring: David Bradley, Morgan Hunter, Jill Pierce

While watching Cyborg Soldier, the retitled sequel to Cyborg Cop (likely because in this movie it’s cop vs. cyborg rather there actually being a cyborg cop), I typed a few thoughts as they popped up in my head.

– Cyborg Soldier contains a trailer for Hoop Dreams, complete with a listing of its Sundance credentials. I somehow get the feeling that those who like movies where David Bradley shoots the shit out of people aren’t going to be renting Hoop Dreams the next night.

– At the beginning of the film, the current Nu Image logo pops up… And then their old logo a few seconds later… Followed immediately by “Nu Image Presents.”

– Newspaper print under the story about Stark escaping – “Crime Blames Parole Policy in Father’s Slaying.” What the hell? Keep in mind that there is no character named ‘Crime.’

– Jack Bradley spends much of the movie making people in suits smack each other.

– You know that monstrous vehicle they used in Universal Soldier? Or if you watched Critical Mass, the huge ass vehicle (courtesy of lifted stock footage) that is used at the end? Well, the cyborg soldiers have one too. It’s just slightly larger than a van, but it has a black and yellow roadblock pattern where its bumper should be, so it’s cool.

– Everyone in the movie gets shot and does the typical fall-off-a-scaffold flip.

– Highlight of the movie comes from Bradley throwing a gun and hitting someone in the face

Big time crime lord Jesse Starkraven is arrested after killing the partner of Detective Jack Ryan (Bradley). Shortly before his execution Starkraven is mysteriously taken away by the government’s Anti-Terrorist Group, who transform him and a few other criminals into cyborgs designed to fight battles for the military. If you’re thinking that giving criminals such powers wasn’t the smartest thing to do, you’re correct, as they break out and hatch a plan to create many more cyborgs. Now it’s time for Jack Ryan to blow some shit up.

Bradley’s the man, and the film is fast paced and filled with explosions, so it’s a fun ride despite plenty of goofy script errors.
