Cruel Intentions 3
Release Date: 25 May 2004 (USA)

Once upon a time, when Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon weren’t starring in crappy movies (and Ryan Phillipe wasn’t a stay-at-home mom), director/writer Roger Kumble helmed the witty and evil Cruel Intentions. Thanks to being just so incredibly different from the typical teenage films coming out at the time, Cruel Intentions went onto make over $40 million dollars worldwide. As a result, the geniuses at FOX decided it would be a good idea to base a television show off the highly success film, naming it “Manchester Prep.” While it surely would have been canceled rather quickly, it never got the chance to air. During the Superbowl, a clip that featured actress Keri Lynn Pratt (who is seen in the abortion (Dead Above Ground) orgasming on top of a horse aired, much to the chagrin of a close friend of Rupert Murdoch. As a result, the show’s pilot was turned into a movie designed for the DTV market, aptly titled Cruel Intentions 2. Well, it wasn’t very good, as, big surprise, it was just a carbon copy of the first. Following the sequel’s great performance on video, there was no doubt in my mind that a second sequel would follow.

Big surprise, one did. With Ryan Phillipe’s character dead, and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s in rehab, it’s up to a college-aged relative by the name of Cassidy to carry their deceitful legacy. Attending an exclusive college, one that seems to not actually make their students attend class that often, she gets into spats quite often with the devious hunk of the college. As you can expect, a lot of events transpire with intentions that are cruel, including sex bets, lies, and a bunch of other stuff that will likely fail to keep your attention.

Cruel Intention 3’s main problem is the fact that its just completely uninventive and uninspired. Cruel Intentions 2 was a carbon copy of its predecessor, but it was at least a poor retelling of a good film. The third film in the series just doesn’t hold up to even my low standards. Once they get past the initial, “Wow, that was cruel” moment, nothing else that’s done is a surprise.

DVD: Standard Direct-to-Video Release.
