Ugh…

I’m a big fan of Daniel Zirilli, a former music video director who has made a successful transition into the world of b-movies through his Pop Art Film Factory company. While he has been responsible (as a producer) for movies like Tha’ Crib and 15 to Life, and some equally awful films as a director, contributions to the genre like Vengeance and Latin Kingz endeared me to him. Cross Bones, his latest effort that managed to get distribution through Lions Gate, is a dud. There’s no real way around it.

Having already seen Treasure Hunt!, Gale Force, and Reality Kills, all about reality shows becoming pits of death, Cross Bones just felt like a repeat. And an unentertaining one with a bad script at that. Long story short, pirate Red Blood had a blood curse put on him by a bunch of fat African tribesmen a few hundred years ago. Fast forward to the twenty-first century, where a reality show is taking place on the island Red Blood resides. Death then proceeds to happen.

Starring three actors who appeared on “Survivor: Africa,” “Big Brother,” and “Temptation Island,” Cross Bones is more irritating than anything. It looks awfully cheap (Red Blood’s tiny pirate ship is obviously a Florida tourist attraction), has nothing in the way of acting, and doesn’t even deliver on the “Bad guy makes remotely funny quips” end.

What’s depressing is that Neal L. Fredericks, who was the cinematographer on The Blair Witch Project before settling into various direct-to-video jobs, died after a helicopter accident when this movie was filming.

Rent Jolly Roger: The Massacre at Cutter’s Cove instead. It is infinitely better than Cross Bones.
DVD: A bland commentary track with Zirilli and a brief making of.
