After so enjoying Dan Mintz’s American Crime I was looking forward to seeing Cookers. Produced on a much smaller budget before American Crime, Cookers tries to emulate the hallucinogenic ghost films of the past, but ultimately fails due to a complete lack of tension.

In order to get the most out of their $400,000 budget, the filmmakers decided to employ the time-honored tradition of placing a very limited number of actors in a limited number of locations. Cookers has just three main characters and is essentially set in one location. That location is a desolate house in the middle of nowhere that’s been abandoned and forgotten for years. A meth addict (Hunt) who has skipped town with a dealer’s supply and his girlfriend are there, thanks to some guidance from a redneck friend, to cook up their own stash. They intend to get rich off of it, but the either the supply or a specter in the house is causing them to both go a little crazy.

Cookers’ could have been something, but it winds up the opposite. At no point in the movie did I feel like the characters were in direct danger. And really, they never are. When you add in the fact that the characters are unlikable, you have a movie that is creepy and well shot (if not a little dark), but not much more.

If anything good can be said about Cookers, it’s that it achieved what Mintz likely set out for. After making Cookers he was able to get financing for American Crime, which was shot for no less than $1.5 million.

Just rent that instead.
DVD: Barebones.
