Originally titled Return to Sender, which doesn’t make all that much sense, Convicted is a semi-impressive effort. While it doesn’t hold a candle to director Billie August’s most known film, Les Misérables, Convicted still makes for a good watch.

Frank Nitzche (Quinn) works in a very odd field. He trades letters with death row inmates, establishing close relationships with them in the process, and then sells the letters to the highest bidder once the switch has been pulled. Nitzche has never become emotionally involved with a mark before, but Charlotte Cory (Nielsen) intrigues him. With only ten days to go until her execution, the potential buyer of Charlotte’s letters is worried when a final letter fails to drop in Nitzche’s mailbox. As a result, Nitzche visits Charlotte, a beautifully young woman convicted for murdering a baby ten years prior, in prison. For the first time ever Nitzche becomes emotionally involved, and from there, begins an investigation with Charlotte’s lawyer (Preston) that unravels her innocence in a fashion that threatens both of their lives.

The best scenes of Convicted come from the tense conversations that Frank Nitzche and Charlotte Cory share. It’s when the screenplay steps outside their meeting room that Convicted slips. While it becomes meagerly interesting towards the end, the initial doubts that Nitzche have are delivered kind of flat.

Much better than the average Lifetime MOW, which is how this would’ve turned out as under any other director.
DVD: Barebones.

Also known as Return to Sender.
