Two films starring Jennifer Love Hewitt were thrown out on video in the last quarter of 2005. The first, The Truth About Love, was so awfully dubbed / synched that it made a simply mediocre movie unbelievably awful as a result. I was so stunned that something so jaw droppingly poor could get a nationwide release that I never even bothered to review it. As for Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber, a made-for-Oxygen TV movie, it’s surprisingly decent.

Admittedly, this was an odd choice for Hewitt. She must’ve really loved playing a hardcore bitch in Heartbreakers, as she took up another spoiled anti-hero role here. Only this time the script paints her character in even worse of light than Heartbreaker’s, and it was never even intended to go beyond a TV movie either.

Hot, bitchy, and all together impossible advertising executive Katya Livingston (Hewitt) made a mistake a while back that’s about to cost her big. After arriving late to the wedding of socialite Frangiapani she sat down and enjoyed some oral sex from the best man. Only, uhhh ohhh, it was actually groom. Now, in the midst of Katya having to deal with a new assistant, a dramatic and suicidal gay best friend (Joey Lawrence, who is now apparently old enough to be called Joseph), accounting problems, and the need for a hot Ricaroni campaign, she learns that she hasn’t been invited to the hottest party of the year. Frangiapani is the venerable host of the event, and doesn’t want Katya anywhere close to the event. Kayta, however, won’t go down so easily.

Since Oxygen is a cable network that isn’t even offered in all areas (damn you for airing “Boston Public” reruns without being available in my city), they took Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber in a more vulgar direction than any network would have. That certainly works in its favor, as the raunchier moments of the movie make up most of its highlights.

Admittedly, it doesn’t all come together well. Colin Ferguson from the U.S. remake of ” Coupling” plays Hewitt’s love interest in the movie. Ferguson’s an uninteresting actor, and not even a touching scene where Hewitt and him strip down to their underwear and prance around a fountain can change this.
