Well this sure wasn’t necessary.

Caged Heat 2: Stripped of Freedom was made about twenty years after Jonathan Demme churned out his classic women in prison flick that partially led to his later career in Hollywood directing films like Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia. In that same twenty year span Caged Heat 2 director Cirio H. Santiago went from making cheap exploitation films to, well, cheap exploitation sequels.

By the time 1994 rolled around, the lifeblood of the women-in-prison genre had been almost sucked dry. This didn’t stop exploitation directors from tackling the genre in the next couple years, as evident by this film, Fred Olen Ray’s Fugitive Rage and Lloyd A. Simandl’s Chained Heat series, among others.

After an opening scene that sees the king of a South Pacific country get shot by a group of anti-American rebels, the king and his mistress are taken in an ambulance to an American military base. It’s here that we learn that the fake assassination was setup by the CIA to prevent (or assist, whatever it may be) a government overthrow, and that the mistress is actually CIA agent Amanda Kelly. The plan seems to have gone off without a hitch. That is not the case, though, as the king’s daughter Princess Marga has been captured by the forces and is now being put into jail for her father’s crimes.

In order to retrieve the princess Amanda once again goes undercover, this time as a tourist with a bag full of drugs that quickly get her snatched by the authorities. Once again the plan doesn’t go fully according to plan, as a young woman transporting pornography also gets nabbed when the agents suspect her and the drug smuggler of being in cahoots. They are transported to Rock Island Penitentiary, and if you’ve ever seen a women-in-prison film, you know that there’s a ruthless warden, constant strip searches, a hose, lunchroom battles, hot girl-on-girl shower action, muddy battles, whippings, explosions, and all that good stuff.

I’m not a huge fan of the women-in-prison genre, so I’m usually not that giddy to go back and review movies like Caged Heat 2. Surprisingly enough, it ain’t so bad. It’s a tad bit too heavy on the plot, and marketing it as a sequel to Caged Heat kind of sets the audience up with high expectations that no simple exploitation director could pull out of the genre after so many years, but it’s still a relatively entertaining ride that never bored me.
Followed by Caged Heat 3000. Seriously.
