Bound by Lies
Release Date: 12 April 2005 (USA)
Genre: Crime | Drama | Thriller
Director(s): Valerie Landsburg
Writer(s): Leland Zaitz (Fast Lane to Vegas) & D. Alvelo (Naked Lies)
Starring: Stephen Baldwin, Kristy Swanson

Really, really, really bad attempt at a thriller has Stephen Baldwin playing a detective who must protect a sultry artist (Swanson) from an obsessed stalker all while doubts about her innocence play in his mind.

When a homeless man’s corpse is found with a wire wrapped around his neck, recently reinstated detective Max Garrett (Baldwin) is put on the case with his new partner. Garrett is, of course, a tough as nails cop with inner conflicts that was put on a six-month suspension after his partner was killed when he overstepped his boundaries to catch an absconding perp. Through their investigation, they find that an obsessed man was likely the killer of both that man and another person. But Garrett discovers certain things on his own, including that his new partner may have more to hide than he once suspected, and that the artist’s friends behave a tad bit oddly.

Bound by Lies attempts to be sexy and provocative. It fails miserably, though. Part of the film’s allure is that Swanson incorporates a lot of dominatrix elements into her photography, not to mention a randomly incorporated storyline about Swanson’s assistant hitting on her. None of this serves a purpose, and it delivers nothing you wouldn’t see or hear on the occasional episode of C.S.I.

If you ever do rent Bound by Lies I encourage you to fast-forward all the way to the sixty-one minute mark. It is here you can witness the worst piece of inner dialogue ever recorded as Baldwin tries his best to wax poetically. “What are you looking for? What’d you take? What’d you… Ohh God, what’d you take? I wish you would’ve taken this coffee.” I have no idea what the purpose of that line was, but what I do know it’s easily the worst delivered line I’ve ever heard come from a Baldwin.

On a sidenote, Kristy Swanson really needs to consider lying off the Collagen injections.
Besides for a nice scene where Swanson attempts to scare Baldwin, this is complete and utter trash.

DVD: It’s set to be barebones.
