Yikes.

The month of April 2005 wasn’t the best for Lions Gate’s direct-to-video releases. Opting to only release three films, two of them turned out to be random pick-ups of long dormant features. The first, The Black Gate, was an incredibly boring ghost story made in 1995. The second is Blood Trail. Produced somewhere around 1997, Blood Trail is not only an ugly film, but it’s just plain unentertaining.

Filmed shortly before digital video truly took off, Blood Trail looks to have been shot on extremely cheap film stock that just doesn’t translate well to any screen. Even as I watched it minimized on my laptop monitor, I was astonished at how bad its quality was. I’m not a DVD elitist, thus explaining why you rarely hear me complain about this kind of stuff, but a company like Lions Gate should put a little bit of effort into making their films not look so ugly.

Although if there’s one film that Lions Gate can feel free to neglect, it is Blood Trail. A lame, sober attempt at a horror western, Blood Trail just never works. The horror elements, which focus on a group of early twentieth century cowboys patrolling the open frontiers while being haunted by Native American spirits, is just uninteresting. The only bit of interest comes from director Tubb’s way of introducing the spirits. As for the western, there’s nothing unusual to be seen or heard; just the usual drinking and Indian bashing with some horse riding thrown in sporadically.

There’s a reason why this took so long to get released.

DVD: Nothing but a trailer.
