When the obese Jew who thinks he’s black (Suplee) and the skinny, sarcastic jerk (Connolly) go on a road trip to Mardi Gras, only to wind up killing an escaped felon named Tyone (Coolio) and getting stuck in a small town, hilarity will ensue, right?
Evidently not.

Bad Trip, filmed in 1999 but never finding distribution until now, is a road trip comedy. Or at least it is for all of fifteen minutes, shortly thereafter settling into the “fishes out of water” convention. Getting arrested for having half of a joint in their possession in a small hick town, it appears that the two are stuck for a while. From there, it goes for absolute insanity, introducing several intertwining subplots.

A drug dealer by the name of Assface (since his face looks like an ass, har har) is angry with them for killing Tyrone, and expects one of the boys to work off their debt. The sheriff’s perverted deputy is also involved with him, which means there’s no way to get out of things. Then there’s Tyrone’s pissed off relatives Jerome and Cherone (both Coolio), who want an expensive ring back that was on Tyrone’s finger when he perished. Adding another subplot, the fat guy gets the local cutie at the diner interested in him.

Bad Trip’s main problem is that like so many direct-to-video comedies, it has ADD. If the above paragraphs sounded choppy, just imagine sitting through the movie. It’s a hodgepodge of failed ideas, forgotten recurring jokes, and poorly executed stories.

While a few jokes are funny, there’s a fair share of ones with expiration dates in the upwards of ten years ago. The story is just ridiculous, never really getting a firm footing, and the general execution is sloppy.

It’s not so bad that you’ll find it difficult to sit through, but it’s really not worth your time.

DVD: A music video with Coolio and Krayzie Bone that actually works as a good promo tool for the movie.
