Babies For Sale is an unsettling little indie that’s so freakin’ weird that, when approaching this review, I nearly forgot that wasn’t all that good.

Lee Ann is a single, outwardly pretentious young woman who has created herself a profitable enterprise in recent years.  Thanks to her complete lack of emotional attachment, she’s sold two of her babies to childless couples.  Most recently she’s been in business with a couple that have a dark secret.  With her friend Angelo by her side, who finds it impossible to understand her, she conceives a third child.  This brings about a big conflict, as Lee Ann is secretly conspiring to sell it, whereas Angelo believes they’re going to raise it together.

As I said, Babies For Sale isn’t that good of a movie.  Like Lee Ann, Babies For Sale is too pretentious for its own good. The performances make the movie.  Most of them are so creepy that it’s very easy to get caught up in them.  Babies For Sale’s writer, Dalene Young, is a frequent scribe of low budget TV movies.  Before Babies she’d never really acted, yet here she pulls off a strange performance as one half of the couple that buys Lee Ann’s second child.  Her husband, played by frequent TV actor Christopher Darga, is great as well.

Originally titled Baby Luv, this took five years to find distribution through York Entertainment.

DVD:  Barebones.
