Where the hell do I start?

Filmed in 1992 under the title The Weekend It Lives by the son of former NAACP director and U.S. Congressman Kewisi Mfume with a budget of roughly $650, Ax ‘Em is one of York Entertainment’s better-known releases. That’s not because it’s a wonderful piece of independent cinema that represents African Americans showing the Hollywood system that they can make great movies if given the opportunity.

No, it’s because it’s the worst movie ever made.

And it pains me to say that. Considering that this is only the 160th review or so I’ve written for Your Video Store Shelf, there are still thousands of movies out there to see. Hell, I still haven’t seen almost two hundred movies in the York Entertainment catalog. Surely a company’s whose owner once said that this abortion “has aspects of urban culture and legends which a lot of people may identify with” will have distributed a movie worse than this. But no, I cannot, under any circumstance, doubt Ax ‘Em’s coveted position as the worst movie ever made.

You can barely hear the dialogue. Hell, some scenes you can’t at all. Only two or three characters have names. The rest are just kind of there. The film’s opening moments consist of grammatical errors up the wazoo. The directing is atrocious, consisting of more one-take scenes than you can count on all your digits. Mfume appears to have sent York a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of his crappy film, so it looks ten times worse than your typical urban film. The film appears to have been shot without a script as well, making it even more groan inducing.

I did not do this film justice. For detailed reviews, please do yourself a favor and check out the reviews at Something Awful and I-Mockery.

DVD: As expected, this is barebones.

I’ll leave you with this note, which I found while trying to find contact information for Mr. Mfume:
…is none other than Michael Mfume, a ne’er-do-well son of former U.S. congressman Kweisi Mfume. The younger Mfume’s August 2004 gun-possession conviction was his third strike. In the 1990s he pled guilty to sexual battery in Atlanta and he received one year’s probation and a $1,000 fine. He also received 18 months probation and a $195 fine for lying to police in Maryland.
