American Heroes: Marines

Nothing much negative to report about this above average Nu Image military flick released under the American Heroes line under the title Marines. Judging by the fact that unlike Air Strike and Submarines, this is a semi-competent film, and it doesn’t blatantly flaunt the patriotism that came after 9/11, I can imagine that this was a script DEJ had bought pre-9/11, simply choosing to produce it for the American Heroes series.

To be honest, there’s not much to talk about. It’s a well produced (when you consider the meager $1 million or so Nu Image likely gave the production) military flick with your basic theme; a terrorist (this time Russian) named Vladmir Antonov has killed American hostages at his hideout in Czechoslovakia. So the rough ‘n’ tuff Americans are sent in with the guns blazing with an objective that they are given 36 hours to complete; capture Antonov or else an air strike will begin whether or not they’ve retreated. Along with them for the ride are a group of poorly trained Russians who provide the film with cannon fodder, character development, and a pinch of humor.

No doubt better than Air Strike, Submarines, and even Air Marshal, but it doesn’t touch Special Forces.

And yes, that is really, really terrible artwork.
DVD: Standard Direct-to-Video Release.
