There are plenty of nifty elements present in Alone, but while Darren Aronofsky makes great movies thanks in part to his distinct directing and editing style, director Phil Claydon sorely lacks all of his flair.

The best parts of Alone’s first hour do come from Claydon’s music video approach to directing. While he goes out of control at times, there are some finer points that he did nail very well. The combination of stalker P.O.V. and the audio effects he employs are great. It’s just too bad the story he chooses to frame it in, about a problematic female serial killer who stalks her woman of choice before killing her, isn’t too great. Then there are the throwaway cop characters that enter the movie and proceed to cloud Alone up even more than it already was.

Alone gets tense and fun for brief moments during the last half hour, but by that point I was too out of the story to really care.
DVD: Barebones.
