While I was familiar with many of Jim Wynorski’s films before starting this Video Relapse, there were a few titles that I knew next to nothing about. One of those was Against the Law, a post-Corman, pre-stock footage action movie he made in the mid-90s. While it didn’t fare tremendously in the market, most of people who have actually seen it have enjoyed it, and I’m one of them.

Against the Law is not one bit complicated. There was no attempt to make this multi-dimensional, and I love it for that. This is a throwback to the old western with a modern-day edge, as Richard Grieco stars as Rex, a fame-obsessed gunslinger who believes going on a cop-killing spree will give him posthumous fame. Charismatic and creepy, Rex challenges officers to draw their guns, and is always the fastest. Enter Detective John Shepard (Mancuso), the renegade cop who smokes a lot. Along with his new partner, Shepard gets caught up in a deadly game with Rex, who is constantly leaving new bodies everywhere he goes.

If you’re willing to forgive Against the Law for featuring a bevy of police characters that don’t see anything wrong with submitting to a gunfight, there’s a very good chance you’ll love this movie. It moves along at a lightning quick pace, has an excellent Mancuso and fun Grieco on screen throughout the entire movie, and actually features Rex uttering the line “Clean up on aisle seven” after shooting someone in a corner store. There’s even a cute ending with Jim Wynorski playing the director of the adaptation of Rex’s life that’s not to be missed.
DVD: The now out-of-print DVD apparently has a transfer made from an inferior copy, so this is one of those few cases where you’re better off just getting the VHS.
