2 Days is easily the most overlooked direct-to-video film of 2004. While this has been a bad year in general for the industry, a select few have managed to pull through and impress the hell out of me. Come December, I’m more than certain that 2 Days will be one of the five movies nominated for Best Direct-to-Video film of the year.

The greatness in this movie literally comes out of nowhere. The weak, weak cover art makes it look like some kind of techno thriller. It’s everything but. It’s a slow, enthralling little indie that gropes you in from the first scene. In that scene, Paul Rudd speaks into a camera belonging to a few film school students. A struggling actor, things just aren’t working for him. He soon reveals that he plans to kill himself in two days.

For the next two days of life, the camera crew follows Rudd’s character around as those close, and even some not, to him try their best to talk him out of doing the deed. During these scenes, we learn about Rudd’s characters and the partial motives behind his suicide. Here in lies one of the few negatives about Two Days. While still a brilliant piece of work, the lack of heavy character development is a deterrent. In addition, there’s a subplot with a crewmember’s girlfriend that doesn’t go far enough to warrant it being in the movie.

Nonetheless, 2 Days is definitely worth seeing.
