Emma Kragen wrote The 12 Dogs of Christmas on a paper napkin when she was 7 years old.” – A special note on the book this film is adapted from.

Christmas. It’s the time of the year for celebration, fake sincerity, and specially themed direct-to-video kids films.

Around this time of the year a few distributors, most of which stray away from kid fare during the other seasons, pluck a few TV-movies from the previous year and throw them out on video. The 12 Dogs of Christmas is one of this year’s lucky few to get a video release that it really didn’t deserve.

During the Depression, which miraculously doesn’t seem to hit the little town the story is focused in, young Emma’s father sends her away to live with her Aunt Delores until Christmastime. Emma doesn’t know it, but her Aunt is nothing more than an ex-girlfriend of her fathers who he didn’t treat very well, and she immediately demands that Emma find herself a job. While exploring the town she is horrified by a group of dogcatchers that are enforcing the city’s new law that bans dogs. Emma first conspires to help the dogs by secretly freeing them, but soon discovers that a school play may be her best method.

12 Dogs of Christmas isn’t funny. It doesn’t really set out to be, and therein lies a problem. Its story sure isn’t interesting enough to really capture anyone other than a child’s attention, and a child with low standards at that. The finale may grasp the interest of some, but that’s only after eighty-five minutes or so of non-entertainment.
DVD: A quick behind-the-scenes featurette that’s more fun to watch than the movie.
